Aswat Freedom Film Screening

Aman space hosted part of the Kooz film festival in collaboration with Aswat.

Two short films were screened; “Marco” for Saleem Haddad and “Half A Life” for Tamara Shogaolu, which was followed by a discussion of the two films, about the topic of migration, displacement and alienation, in addition to a Skype call with Aswat’s event where the two movies were also being screened in Haifa, Palestine.

About the Kooz program.

Displacement and alienation are among the most difficult and painful of human experiences, be it that born out of migration in search of a better life, forced displacement as a result of war and persecution, or escape from the judgments of one’s country. But a sense of alienation does not only result from spatial or geographic dislocation. It can manifest itself in one’s relationship with one’s body, surroundings, and environment. Alienation is a temporary feeling of being a stranger—to oneself or to one’s surroundings—which affects a person’s behaviours and relationship to their environment. In Marx’s thought, alienation is a feature of capitalism, which instrumentalises and appropriates workers’ labour, resulting in a major crisis that must be solved and addressed.
